Distance Learning with Ahuriri

Wednesday 8th September

Wonderful Wednesday!

We are all very excited about seeing you tomorrow when school opens back up for everyone!

The teachers today are busy at school getting ready for tomorrow's fun filled day of learning and play. Please feel free to try some of the learning activities we have posted for you today at home, or have a day of play. You can continue to post on ClassDojo - but please keep in mind that the teachers may not be able to comment. We will however look at all the wonderful things you are doing and approve them so that they will appear in your portfolio.

We have been absolutely blown away by the amazing effort, creativity and perseverance you have shown during our online learning. A huge shout out needs to go to the grown-ups at home who have done an incredible job enabling and supporting these learning experiences. You are brilliant and we want to thank you.

Phonics

Do you like to play Hide and Seek? You might even get some time to play it. Today Mrs Edwards reads us a fun story about hide and seek. We’ll learn how to write the letter ‘l’ and the word ‘look’. We can even try to rhyme with this word. Please check out the teacher video

Writing

Hank is a funny little hedgehog. He likes to go on lots of adventures. Today he is taking his friends on a picnic. Please click here for the story. Mrs Davies will help us to write a list of what we might like to have on our own picnic. You might even be able to have your lunch or afternoon tea as a picnic.

If you’d like to hear/read some more fun stories about Hank and his friends on the right-hand menu of this blog.

Maths

It’s Lamb’s birthday and we’re making a cake! Mrs Phillips and Bruno were wondering how many candles have we blown out by the time we are 5? Please click here to see if you can help them. If you want to do some extra thinking you could work out how many candles you will blow out by the time you are 7!

Mindfulness and Play

Please feel free to check out our Play and Mindfulness pages on our blog for some calming or fun ideas for today.

Tuesday 7th September

Ahuriri you are amazing! We really enjoyed seeing what you got up to yesterday. There were lots of symmetry superheroes and so many wonderful dragon creations. We are so excited that we are going to get to see you back at school again soon. We have missed you so much!

We hope that you enjoy the activities that we have planned for today.

Phonics

Have you ever seen a rainbow? Imagine if you could make your own rainbow at home! Mrs Hartnell will be sharing a book and looking at the letter r. Watch this video to join her.

Maths

Poor Pukeko needs your help! She has been trying to write some numbers but is getting a bit muddled up. Let’s have fun practising writing numbers with Pukeko and Mrs Davies by clicking here.

Writing

Today our writing is based around a fun story called “The Little Green Donkey.” To listen to the story, click here. After you have listened to the story, Mrs Phillips has a special challenge for you. Here is the writing lesson.

Wellbeing

One of the best things we can do for our wellbeing is to be kind or give to others.

As well as strengthening our connection with others, kindness and giving makes us happier. It's also contagious! If we are kind to someone, they are likely to be kind back.

Harold the Giraffe knows how kind the children in Ahuriri are and he has set you a challenge - Harold's Kindness Bingo.

We hope you have a fabulous day today. Enjoy the sunshine and make sure you check in with us on ClassDojo. We love seeing your smiling faces!

Monday 6th September

Kia ora Ahuriri!

The Ahuriri teachers hope that you had a wonderful weekend, we certainly had some spectacular weather. We hope that all the dads associated with the studio had a terrific Fathers day too.

Phonics
Today Mrs Edwards is reading "Charlie Cook's Favourite Book". We will be looking at the c and k sounds.

Maths
Mrs Davies is turning you all into superheros and exploring symmetry. You can see her lesson here.

Writing
Today we are going to visit a Dragon sanctuary with Mrs Edwards. Click on this link to take you there!

Here is the writing lesson.

Mindfulness
Today in Mindfulness we are exploring Thought Bubbles.

Other activities that you could do today are to go and check out the new reading books that have been issued to you in Wushka. You could also take a look at your Matific account and have a go at some of the maths challenges.

Remember to post up your activities as you go through the day - we love seeing what you get up to!

-----------------------------------------------

Funday Friday!

Click on this link to receive a pirate message from Mrs Hartnell, who has sailed away on her pirate ship.

Secret Pirate Mission

Shhhh...it’s Fathers Day on Sunday! You can use these ideas (or your own) to make a special card for Dad (or Grandad or someone special to you).

Build a Pirate Ship

Build yourself a pirate ship. You could use chairs, boxes, a washing basket - be creative! Perhaps you could add a mast, sail and even a flag. If you have a blue blanket or sheet, you could lay it underneath so that it looks like you’re sailing on the ocean.

Pirate Telescope

Every pirate needs a telescope so that they can look out for islands and plan their course. Can you create a telescope by reusing things from around your house - rolled up cardboard, paper towel tubes, toilet paper rolls.

Pirate Treasure Map

Hide some treasure in your house of garden. It could be anything - some dress up jewellery, a toy, a secret note or a tasty treat.

Draw a map that will help someone in your bubble to find the treasure. Remember that X marks the spot.

You could dab your map with a wet tea bag to make it look old. Wait for it to dry before you roll it up and tie it with some string or ribbon.

Pirate Hide and Seek

Now it's time to put your pirate skills to the test. Ask someone in your bubble to hide some treasure in lots of different spots around your house or garden.

You could make your own coins by wrapping items in tinfoil. You could use acorns, connect 4 pieces, pasta shapes or Lego.

After the loot is out of sight, go searching and see if you can find all of the booty. Happy hunting!

Draw a Pirate

If you would like to learn how to draw a pirate, follow this link for a fun step by step video. We’d love to see your creations!

Pirate Treasure Box

Pirates are fearless! Ask somebody in your bubble to hide some hidden treasures in a bag or box. Without peeking, use your pirate sense of touch to discover what the secret items could be. Arghhhh you brave enough?

Pirate Lego

Do you love Lego? Here are some pirate challenges for you. Can you make these pirate inspired creations? For the extra clever lads and lasses, try the challenge that has been set below each picture.

Pirate Yoga

It’s important that pirates practice mindfulness. Click on this link to go on a Pirate Yoga Adventure.

We hope you have a day full of adventure and fun! Don’t forget to post some photos or videos on ClassDojo so that we can see what you’ve been up to.

Terrific Thursday

Writing

Spring is here! We would like you to think about your favourite part of Spring. Draw a picture and write a story. You can click on this link to find out what Mrs Hartnell likes about Spring. In the video, there are also photos of some of our Ahuriri friends enjoying the beautiful Spring flowers.

Take a photo of your work and if you like, you could record yourself reading out your story. Send it in to your teacher to brighten up their day!

Mathematics

Let’s go and make the dinner with Mrs Phillips. She needs to know how many tomatoes are for dinner.  Watch her sort out the problem!

https://drive.google.com/file/d/10NHvWWJILB1CPfugNoBoZZhTsGhK2qRS/view

Can you make large groups easy to count?  Take a large handful of something in your house like lego blocks.  They’re always hard to count when they are in a pile.  Can you sort them into groups so they are easy to count? Groups of 2 or 5 or 10 will make it easy to see.

Storytime and Phonics

Listen to the story Each Peach Pear Plum.  We think it will make you smile.  Can you find the word that keeps appearing in the story?

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1r-rn45XHGzTdkFcfgyBT5PJ2Lw5itqI2/view

Let's explore and rhyme with the letter y.  You might even like to play the game I spy with colours, letters or starting sounds.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1iWo5PczjO_jhv6Q9DiMjkCikb8DTkiti/view

You could practise your ’y’s on paper or you can copy this great idea from Nagi!  She did it with ‘p’ but you could do it with ‘y’.

Mindfulness

It’s a beautiful day.  Let’s get outside and enjoy it!  Take a look first at this table and choose a few things to do..  How many things can you tick off?

After a long walk outside you can up those feel good vibes even further by having a sing-a-long to the tunes below.  They are Ahuriri favourites.  Crank it up and sing out loud! I want to hear you from my house!

Have a terrific, tantalising, tremendous Thursday!

Wonderful Wednesday

Kia ora Everyone, we have been loving seeing all your posts.  Today as we move down to Level 3 we want to acknowledge that for many of you it may mean that a key person in your household has to return to work.  This may add extra pressure to managing home tasks, learning and work commitments.  Your family’s wellbeing is the most important factor as we move forward, so please don’t feel any pressure to complete all the online learning tasks.  Even if you send us a photo of some of the things you are doing in your bubble with a quick message of how you are getting on that would be wonderful.  We are missing and thinking of you all.

Writing - Kindness

We know that it is hard to be in lockdown away from our friends, but if we are kind to people in our bubble we can help each other through the day.  Being kind makes a big difference.

Please watch “Colour Your World With Kindness

We know you are super kind.  Today we would love for you to draw a picture or get someone to take a photo of you being kind in your bubble.  You could then write what you are doing to be kind.  For example:

I am kind.

I hug my mum.

I am kind.

I share my toys.

I am kind.

I help dad tidy up.

Please watch Mrs Davies in this teaching video to help:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GkDHFM2Fo4x8MH5-ruFZNh7cQOWt3jtB/view

Maths - Capacity

This is a fun maths activity to do with a grown up over the sink in the kitchen, outside on the grass with a bucket or in the bath or shower.

Your challenge is to find 6 things that hold water around your house and put them in order from what holds the least amount of water to the most.

Please watch the following teaching video with Mrs Edwards first to help you with your challenge:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hmJ8Vu3Pv4sW0A7JWgxNSTjZoscZxHc6/view

Phonics - Letter P - POP with Bubble Trouble!

Meet the Crocodile who loves to blow bubbles with Mrs Phillips - please follow this link:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fP3xrfZDoe0wUkWzsv6D_CGmMECHRrY2/view

For Phonics today feel free to practise writing the letter ‘p’ in different ways, you don’t just need to write it on paper or on a whiteboard you could:

  • Write p in sand if you have a sandpit at home.

  • Squirt the letter p on concrete with your drink bottle.

  • Paint the letter p with paint on paper or with water on concrete.

  • Put flour or rice on a plate or in a slice baking tin and write p in it.

  • Do rainbow writing where a grown up writes a big p on paper and you go over and over it with lots of different colours.

  • Write the letter with your finger in the air, on the carpet, on your leg, on someone’s back.

Please remember to form your ps correctly - you could say: “Down, back up and around” as you write your ps.

You might like to find things that start with p around your home or play Eye Spy things that start with p.

You could even write the word POP and draw things around the word that go pop - like popcorn, fireworks...

Mindfulness - Some fun songs with Michal

We are very lucky in Ahuriri as we have had the famous singer Michal come to sing to us over the past two years.  Today’s Music with Michal is about being kind and feeling happy.  Check them out.

You may know these songs already - if you do try to sing along and remember to dance.  Dancing is a great way to move our bodies and to help us to feel happy.

Feel free to send a video to us of your cool dance moves!  We would also love for you to do something today that makes you feel HAPPY!  We’d love to see a photo or a video of your happy thing!

Kindness is Free

I feel Happy

Have a happy day Ahuriri - filled with kindness.  We look forward to seeing what you get up to!

  1. Pour the dishwashing liquid into the container.

  2. Add the water then the sugar and stir everything together gently.

  3. Then head outside and blow bubbles!

Phonics

Mrs Davies is heading into Outer Space to explore the letter j today. Hop in your rocket ships and blast off with her by watching this video.

Wellbeing

In Ahuriri, we have been exploring Te Whare Tapa Whā. One of the four pillars is Taha Tinana - Physical Wellbeing. Jump Jam is a great way to support our Physical Wellbeing and it’s something that we love to do together in our Studio.

Click on this link to have a go at the Jump Jam routine “Witch Doctor” with Mrs Hartnell and her daughters. Charlie even dressed up as a witch to support them!

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday 27th August

Ahuriri, you have had a wonderful week!

The teachers have been so impressed with how much you have participated in the online learning programme.

A big thank you to all the family members who have also helped Ahuriri get connected and take part in learning activities.

Let’s start Funday Friday with one of Ahuriri’s favourite breath practises: Hikitia te Ha

If you would like to continue with working on practices to help calm emotions and to focus your thinking you could make a Mindfulness Jar.

Here’s a short video on how you could do this, with some suggestions for alternative items that you may have around your house.

When we were last in Ahuriri we were learning this waiata. This is a link to a teaching video featuring some of our senior leaders, maybe you would like to learn the waiata actions and words. The lyrics and translation are there too.

Today, for Funday Friday we are all going to be turned into Explorers and go on an adventure!

Think about what you would like to explore and what type of adventurer you are:

  • Are you a treasure hunter

  • Or an archaeologist

  • Maybe you are a botanist looking for rare flowers

  • Perhaps you are exploring a new land

  • You could be a palaeontologist looking for dinosaur fossils.

Have a think about what an explorer would wear and see if you can dress up as one.

Make a map to go on an adventure in your house or garden (depending upon the weather!).

Work out:

  • Where you are going to go for lunch

  • Where you would like to make a camp

Then mark these spots on your map.

Make yourself a lunch in your lunch box - you could use the information that you got from Harold the Giraffe.

Think about items that are:

  • Healthy foods (Packed full of nutritious elements - fruit, vegies)

  • Go food  (Gives us energy- cereals, bread, noodles, rice)

  • Strong food (Helps our bones and teeth - nuts, dairy, cheese, yoghurt, plant based items)

  • Grow food (Helps us grow - nuts, pulses, meat, fish)

Remember you don’t need slow food on your adventure!

In your rucksack

  • pack your lunch box and water bottle

  • Put a large sheet in there too

  • Pop in a favourite soft toy to be your buddy

  • Take a favourite activity or equipment to help you do your exploration

  • Can you squeeze in a cushion?

Off you go on your trip. When you find a good spot to make a camp you can use your large sheet to make a tent or den. You could eat your lunch when you are hungry and keep yourself busy with your favourite activity.

If you are a botanist you could see if you can display any plants that you find like this - remember to ask a grown-up before collecting any plants and flowers in case they are special and need to keep growing.

  1. Draw a vase on a piece of card
  2. Put some hole at the top of the vase
  3. Poke flowers and plant cuttings into the hole

If you have a cardboard box or blocks you could have a go at making a tramping hut for your toys:

  • They might need beds, sleeping bags, walking poles.

  • Outside the hut there might be bridges, bushes.

  • Don’t forget to make signs - a hut name, sign posts

.

Lucila (T2) and her older sister Kaila (T14) have a story to read to you -
Thelma the Unicorn!

If you pop over to our the Blog home page later today you will be able to see other children from Ahuriri doing their learning activities in their own bubbles

Have a wonderful Funday Friday - we look forward to seeing your adventures on Class Dojo!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday

Mōrena Ahuriri!  Wow weren’t we lucky to have another wonderful day of sunshine again yesterday.  Let’s hope this warm weather stays with us.

You have all been so busy doing lots of fun learning and play at home.  Thank you for sharing what you have got up to, we love seeing you all through Class Dojo - it makes us smile too.  Well done to all the mums and dads too!  You are doing an amazing job juggling everything at home while still managing to upload photos, videos, pictures and writing.  We are so impressed!

Today there are some new tasks that you might like to try.  Remember, there is no pressure to do any of these things, they are just ideas to help with learning at home.  If you are busy doing other things as a family that is wonderful!  We would love to see any photos or videos you'd like to share.

Writing - My Favourite Toy

Have you got a favourite toy at home?  We would love to see and find out more about your favourite toy.  If you could draw us a picture and write about your new toy we would love to read your writing.  Your writing could go like this:

I love my toy….

My toy is …. (soft, cuddly, fast)

Here is a fun story you might like to watch all about toys before you start.

In this teaching video which you may like to watch to help you with your writing, Mrs Edwards tells us about her favourite toy called Patty.  I wonder if you can guess what type of toy Patty might be?

Maths - Maths Eyes

Maths is all around us.  Today for maths we are going to look with our maths eyes turned on. Talk about each picture with your maths eyes on. You can either watch this teaching Video with Mrs Phillips or you can look at the photo below and tell us what you notice.

You might notice numbers, shapes, sizes, groups, patterns …

You can post a video of you talking about the final picture on the video or any of the pictures.  Or you may like to take a photo of something at your house and use your maths eyes to describe what you notice.  You could record your voice telling us what you see in your photo.

Phonics - Letter ‘i’

Today we are exploring letter i. Please feel free to watch this teaching video first that shares a story beginning with i and then watch the second video that can help to explain how to write the letter.  Please don’t worry if you don’t have a whiteboard and a pen, paper and a pencil or crayon are fine.

At home you might like to…

  • Collect things from around your house that start with the letter i.

  • Practice writing the letter i or words that start with the letter i.

Wellbeing - Yoga and Hide and Seek

Yoga

Aiden from T1 shared a great chart with some cool yoga poses to try out yesterday.  His mum and dad took a photo of him doing some of the poses and sent it to us.  It looked like lots of fun and it is a good way to stretch your muscles.

Hide and Seek

Having fun and laughing is a great way to relax our bodies and look after our wellbeing.  Playing a game of Hide and Seek is a great way to have fun and giggle.  You might like to play inside or outside.  Today’s writing is about our favourite toys.  You might even like to hide your favourite toy for someone in your family to find.  Toys can hide in all sorts of funny places.  You might like to leave a little bit of your toy sticking out to give your family a clue.  This is a good one to play if it gets cold or wet outside.

Have a lovely day today. We look forward to seeing your posts on ClassDojo!
